This time there are several new tools to play with that impact everything from what the map looks like when it starts up to how your trip planning goes. The Settings menu is one place to start, because from there you can enable Maps to start up in Satellite view. If you got tired of switching back forth prefer this outlook, this will be a welcome change. Another small but helpful addition is a new set of lists to be found when looking up a restaurant or other venue....

The Mac is in the midst of a photo editor renaissance, with applications like Photos for macOS continuing to improve and third-party options likes Affinity Photo popping up. Adobe, too, recently launched Lightroom CC, an all new cloud-based version of Lightroom for the Mac. Today, Macphun, the developers behind several popular photography applications for macOS, are introducing Luminar 2018, their answer to the increasingly competitive software landscape. Adobe’s Lightroom CC has generated a bit of controversy in photography circles, as users find themselves faced with adopting new workflows and rethinking their organization strategies....

Although Maggie Q found tremendous success on the small screen as the titular femme-fatale Nikita, the gorgeous Hawaiian-born actress hasn’t been so lucky on the big screen. Here’s hoping all that changes with the release of Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island this Valentine’s Day! After all, only three of Q’s movies rated on Rotten Tomatoes currently rank as 50% fresh or better. The US Department of Justice says Maksim Berezan, a 37-year-old from Estonia, took part in at least 13 ransomware attacks, including seven against American businesses, which cost victims over $53 million in losses. Berezan was an active member of an online forum designed for Russian-speaking cyber criminals to gather and exchange their criminal knowledge, tools, and services, the DoJ said. SEE: Cybersecurity: Let’s get tactical (ZDNet special report) Berezan was arrested in Latvia in November 2020 and extradited to the US where he pleaded guilty in April 2021 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud affecting a financial institution and conspiracy to commit access device fraud and computer intrusions....

A few Apple map related stories have popped up today starting with the departure of early Placebase founder– the mapping company Apple bought back in 2009– Jaron Waldman. After Apple bought Placebase, Waldman started and lead the Apple Geo team behind the Apple Maps infrastructure and location services on iOS and Mac like MapKit and CoreLocation. He was at Apple up until last month and even filed for numerous Apple mapping patents, but recently left to work at a “new startup” according sources and verified by his LinkedIn page....

When we reported the release of the Mac OS 10.7.1 update last week we were unsure whether or not new updaters would have to always grab additional updates through Software Update. However, it now looks like that won’t be the case as Apple has today updated Lion and the roughly 4GB installer to 10.7.1 on the Mac App Store. Apple will most likely carry on this new trend of releasing the delta update via SU first, followed by updating Lion in the Mac App Store for new downloaders....

With the launch of the 16-inch MacBook Pro and the new Mac Pro, Apple is increasingly focusing on the professional consumer market. Now we have found evidence that the company is working on a new feature for macOS that should further improve the workflow for professionals. The latest macOS Catalina 10.15.3 beta build contains references to a new “Pro Mode,” which can be turned on and off by users. Some strings mention that “Apps may run faster, but battery life may decrease and fan noise may increase” and “Fan speed limit overridden” when the Pro Mode is activated....
